Who Was Eva Reichmann?
The prize is named in honor of Eva Reichmann (1897–1998), a scholar and historian whose life and work shaped early research on antisemitism.
Born in Lubliniec in 1897, Reichmann earned a doctorate in sociology and began working in 1924 for the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith. She contributed articles to its newspaper Der Morgen and later became one of its editors during the rise of National Socialism.
After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1939, Reichmann continued her work in London. She became head of the research department at the Wiener Library and was a founding member of the Leo Baeck Institute. Her research focused on the situation of German Jews, antisemitism in society, and the history of the murder of European Jews. She also supported dialogue between Jewish and Christian communities.
Reichmann passed away in London in 1998 at the age of 101. The prize reflects her lifelong commitment to research, documentation, and public understanding.
