SPA/RAC was established in 1985 to support Mediterranean countries in protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. The centre works directly with governments, scientists, and international partners to conserve endangered species, manage protected areas, and implement biodiversity policies across the Mediterranean region.
The organization plays a major role in implementing the Post-2020 Strategic Action Programme for Biodiversity (SAPBIO) and supporting countries in achieving sustainable environmental goals aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda.
Position Overview
The Biodiversity Programme Coordinator will work closely with the SPA/RAC Director and international partners to guide regional biodiversity programmes, coordinate scientific collaboration, and help Mediterranean countries strengthen marine and coastal conservation policies.

Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will:

Lead implementation and evaluation of the Post-2020 SAPBIO programme

Coordinate international meetings, advisory committees, and focal point sessions

Collaborate with scientists, governments, and NGOs across the Mediterranean

Support the development of SPA/RAC’s biannual programme of work

Prepare technical reports, working documents, and project agreements

Identify funding opportunities and contribute to fundraising initiatives

Represent SPA/RAC at regional and international environmental meetings

Support awareness publications and biodiversity communication activities
Eligibility Criteria
Education
-
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in:
-
Marine biology
-
Ecology
-
Marine/coastal environmental management
-
Marine natural resources management
-
Related environmental field
-
Experience
-
Minimum 15 years of professional experience in marine and coastal biodiversity project or programme management

Experience in international or multinational organizations preferred

Background in budgeting, reporting, and project implementation

Experience working in the Mediterranean region is highly desirable
