The Sex Workers Project (SWP) at the Urban Justice Center invites applications for Immigration Legal Internships based in New York City. This position offers a flexible hybrid schedule (remote and in-person) and is available for the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. The internship is designed for highly motivated problem-solvers who are committed to advancing the rights of immigrant sex workers and survivors of trafficking.
This internship provides an opportunity to work closely with experienced immigration practitioners while gaining hands-on experience in legal advocacy, research, and direct client representation.
About the Sex Workers Project (SWP)
The Sex Workers Project is a pioneer in the defense of the human rights of sex workers. Operating within the Urban Justice Center, SWP provides legal and social services to individuals who engage in sex work and to survivors of human trafficking. The project works to protect these communities from discrimination and violence while advocating for systemic change.
Internship Overview
The internship offers a hybrid working arrangement, allowing for both remote work and in-person presence at the Urban Justice Center office in New York City.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions. Interns will receive regular supervision and mentorship from the team’s experienced immigration attorneys.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will support the SWP immigration practice area through a range of legal and advocacy tasks, including but not limited to:

Client Support: Working directly with the immigrant sex worker client base on immigration applications, including:

Asylum claims
-
T nonimmigrant status (T-Visas)
-
Adjustment of Status
-
Naturalization
-
-
Legal Documentation: Meeting regularly with clients to draft affidavits and assisting the team of attorneys in preparing immigration cases before adjudicators.

Research & Advocacy: Conducting in-depth legal research and supporting broader advocacy efforts.
Required Skills and Competencies
Applicants should demonstrate the following skills and professional attributes:

Language Skills: Professional fluency in Spanish or another community language is required.

Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with immigration law.

Cultural Competence: Comfort and sensitivity in working closely with LGBTQ clients and survivors of trauma.

Soft Skills: Must be a highly motivated problem-solver.
