The U.S. Embassy Oslo invites Norwegian high school students to apply for the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship (BFTF) Summer Institute 2026, a prestigious fully funded four-week exchange program hosted at Purdue University in the United States.

This internationally recognized summer institute brings together outstanding students from Europe and the United States to engage in academic learning, leadership development, and cross-cultural exchange focused on transatlantic relations and democratic values.

About the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship (BFTF)

The Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship is a four-week, in-person academic and cultural exchange program designed to strengthen relationships between young Europeans and Americans.

Hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, the program combines university-level coursework with hands-on learning experiences. Participants take part in:

• Expert lectures and academic seminars

• Faculty- and mentor-led workshops

• Group presentations and discussions

• Community service and civic engagement

• Site visits and cultural excursions

• Homestays with American families

Together, these experiences provide participants with a deep and authentic understanding of U.S. society, institutions, and democratic traditions.

Academic Focus & Learning Themes

During the institute, students explore key global and civic topics, including:

• U.S. foreign policy priorities

• Democratic practices and civic responsibility

• Freedom of expression: rights and responsibilities

• Conflict resolution and problem-solving

Program Cost & Funding

The Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute is fully funded by the U.S. Embassy Oslo and the U.S. Department of State.

The funding covers:

• Tuition and academic materials

• International and domestic travel

• Accommodation and meals

• Program activities and excursions

Selected students do not need to pay any participation fees.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Applicants must:

• Be born between June 23, 2008, and June 23, 2010

• Be highly proficient in English

• Have at least one year of high school remaining after completing the program

• Demonstrate strong leadership potential

• Show a genuine interest in transatlantic relations, diplomacy, and the United States

• Maintain a high level of academic achievement, supported by grades, awards, or recommendations

• Be actively involved in community service or extracurricular activities

• Have little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States

Students from all backgrounds, including students with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
