International Humanitarian Law Internship 2026: What to Expect

As an Intern in International Humanitarian Law, you will work within the IHL (HOR) team, which operates under the Legal Affairs Department. The department consists of a close-knit team of lawyers specializing in general legal matters, privacy, and international humanitarian law.

You will be based at the Red Cross Association office in The Hague, with opportunities for hybrid working, and will be actively involved in real legal and policy-related projects.

This internship is particularly suited for students interested in international law, humanitarian law, human rights, and global justice.

Key Responsibilities

During the internship, you will support the IHL (HOR) team with:

• Monitoring international developments and conducting research in international humanitarian law

• Writing articles and legal content on IHL for internal and external communications

• Coordinating the screening of companies against Red Cross principles and humanitarian standards

• Responding to requests for information related to international humanitarian law

• Managing and updating social media channels and tracking relevant news and legal developments

In addition, interns may also assist other legal staff within the Legal Affairs Department on broader legal issues with social and humanitarian impact.

Eligiblity Crieteria

The Netherlands Red Cross is looking for candidates who:

• Are in the final stage of law studies (Dutch law, international law, human rights law, international humanitarian law, or international criminal law)

• Are enrolled at a Dutch university

• Have basic knowledge of and a demonstrated interest in international humanitarian law

• Are proactive, stress-resistant, independent, and enjoy teamwork

• Have strong oral and written communication skills

• Are comfortable using Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and social media platforms such as X (Twitter) and Facebook

• Have a good command of Dutch and English (spoken and written)

• Are available 3 to 4 days per week (24–32 hours)

University guidance and assessment are part of the internship structure, with learning objectives formulated jointly with the Red Cross.
