The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) invites applications for a full-time Registration Internship based in Algiers, Algeria. This opportunity is hosted within the Registration Unit of the Protection Section and is designed for recent graduates or students seeking practical experience in refugee protection, data management, and international humanitarian work.

This internship provides hands-on experience in implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for registration, managing documentation, and directly assisting refugees and asylum-seekers.

Established in 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives and protecting rights. The agency currently operates in over 130 countries, utilizing its long-standing expertise to protect and care for millions of forcibly displaced people worldwide. In Algiers alone, the operation serves more than 10,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, primarily hailing from the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. The unit helps secure durable solutions and manages a sharp escalation in asylum requests, with arrival numbers in 2024 reaching as high as 400 individuals per month due to regional crises.

Internship Overview

The internship is located in Algiers, Algeria, and is a full-time role (40 hours per week).

  • Schedule: Sunday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

  • Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help cover the cost of food, local transportation, and living expenses.

  • Supervision: The intern will work under the supervision of the Assistant Registration and Identity Management Officer.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will support the Registration Unit through a range of operational and administrative tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting in implementing Registration and Data Entry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in accordance with relevant standards

  • Supporting the renewal of documentation for asylum seekers and refugees

  • Participating in counseling and reception activities alongside unit colleagues

  • Assisting with filing activities and data management

  • Performing other related duties as required by the supervisor

Eligibility and Academic Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Recent Graduate: Have completed studies within two years of applying.

  • Current Student: Be enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate programme and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies.

  • Field of Study: Must be in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Required Skills and Competencies

Applicants should demonstrate the following technical and professional skills:

  • Languages: Good command of spoken and written Arabic, French, and English is desirable.

  • Computer Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft products (Outlook, SharePoint, Teams).

  • Software Skills: Familiarity with registration and scheduling software is ideal.

  • Professional Skills: Strong analytical and organizational skills.
