About the Walsh Scholars Programme

The Walsh Scholars Programme is Teagasc’s long-standing postgraduate scholarship scheme, established in honour of Dr Tom Walsh, the organisation’s first Director. The programme supports advanced research training in agriculture, food, environment, climate and rural development.

For 2026, the intake includes 17 PhD opportunities funded directly by Teagasc. The programme reflects continued investment in developing highly skilled researchers to address priority challenges facing Ireland’s agri-food and bioeconomy sectors.

Scholars undertake fully funded PhD or Research Masters study while contributing to research with strong national and international relevance.

Research Areas and Project Focus

The 2026 projects span a wide range of priority research areas, including:

  • Sustainable agriculture and food systems

  • Climate and environmental science

  • Grassland and livestock systems

  • Crop production

  • Soil and nutrient management

  • Food innovation

  • Rural development

  • Farmer wellbeing

Scholars are based at Teagasc’s national research centres and partner universities. Each student receives joint supervision from Teagasc researchers and academic staff at leading Irish and international universities.

The programme combines academic excellence with applied research, supported by access to modern research facilities, strong university partnerships and engagement with national and international research networks.

Funding and Financial Support

The Walsh Scholars Programme provides full financial support to selected candidates.

Scholars receive:

  • A stipend of €25,000 per year

  • Tuition fees covered up to €6,000 per year (subject to programme terms and conditions)

The programme is funded by Teagasc along with national and European funders, including Research Ireland, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), Horizon Europe and other funding bodies.

Training and Professional Development

In addition to research training, scholars benefit from a structured doctoral training framework. This includes:

  • Opportunities for international collaboration

  • Conference participation

  • Training in communication, leadership and problem-solving

  • Membership in a supportive, cohort-based research community

The programme is designed not only to develop strong researchers, but also to prepare graduates for leadership roles across the agri-food sector.

Jane Kavanagh, Head of Research Development and Walsh Scholars at Teagasc, said the programme offers graduates an opportunity to develop to doctoral level within a structured and supportive environment, strengthened by university partnerships and international engagement.

Pat Dillon, Director of Research at Teagasc, highlighted the importance of building a strong pipeline of research talent to support the future of Ireland’s agri-food sector.
