Town of Knightdale Stormwater Intern Summer 2026 [Stipend $17.79/hr]
Paid Summer 2026 municipal internship — Town of Knightdale Stormwater Intern role offers hands-on environmental compliance, GIS mapping, and infrastructure inspection experience.
The Town of Knightdale Public Works Department has officially opened applications for the Summer 2026 Stormwater Intern position. The town is inviting students who want practical environmental and municipal engineering experience to work alongside local government staff on stormwater inspections, compliance work, and community outreach activities.
About the Internship
This internship places students directly inside a functioning municipal department. Instead of only studying regulations in class, interns will see how a town actually manages drainage systems, development sites, and environmental protection requirements.
The intern will support the Town’s NPDES MS4 permit program and Stormwater Management Plan, which are the rules municipalities follow to control pollution in rainwater runoff.
You will work both outdoors in the field and indoors in an office setting — a mix that gives real understanding of how infrastructure and environmental regulations connect in day-to-day operations.
What You Will Do
During the internship, you will assist Public Works staff with daily operations such as:
-
Inspecting stormwater infrastructure and drainage systems
-
Visiting construction and development sites
-
Reviewing privately owned stormwater control measures
-
Preparing compliance and regulatory documentation
-
Performing GIS mapping and data entry
-
Helping with environmental reporting
-
Supporting public education and outreach activities
You will also interact with town staff and residents, which helps build communication and professional skills.

Why This Opportunity Matters
Many students graduate with theory but no field exposure. Municipal internships like this one provide real inspections, reporting work, and community interaction — the same tasks professionals perform after graduation. That experience often makes a candidate stand out during full-time job applications.
