What Is the Army HBCU-MI SPARK Program?

The Army HBCU-MI SPARK program is a 10-week, full-time summer research internship that places selected students at Army research facilities across the United States. Interns are matched with Army scientist mentors and conduct on-site research aligned with the Army’s science, technology, and national security priorities.

This is a structured, multi-stage program that includes application review, mentor selection, background investigation, and a fully funded summer internship experience.

Internship Duration and Dates

Internship dates depend on the student’s academic calendar:

  • Semester System Students:
    June 1, 2026 – August 7, 2026

  • Quarter System Students:
    June 22, 2026 – August 28, 2026

Interns must commit to the full internship period and work 40 hours per week. Remote work is not permitted.

Pay, Housing, and Travel Support

Accepted interns receive a stipend of $1,500 per week, paid bi-weekly.

In addition, the program provides:

  • Fully arranged housing

  • Travel to and from the assigned Army facility

  • Travel coordination handled entirely by the program

Students are not required to make their own housing or travel arrangements.

Eligible Academic Disciplines

The SPARK internship is open to students pursuing STEM or Army-relevant disciplines, including but not limited to:

Aeronautical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Materials Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Software Engineering

Non-technical degrees such as arts, humanities, or management are not eligible.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen (dual citizenship not permitted)

  • Be enrolled at an HBCU or Minority Institution (MI)

  • Be pursuing a STEM or Army-relevant field of study

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Be a full-time student or recent graduate (December 2025 or later)

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.75

  • Successfully complete a background investigation

  • Possess valid federal identification

Some positions may require a security clearance.
